Alpine Adventures: Is Summer the new Winter?

Chamonix: I can see the pub from here
Welcome to AlpineEye with news and information about visiting the European Alps. I am an ABTA Travel Agent specialising in Alpine Weekend breaks so discover your active alpine side, Summer or Winter.

The Summer. Isn't that when ski resorts gather dust and paint the chairlift pylons? Not any more. Summer is big business for hiking, biking, zip-lining or sitting in the sun. Fans of water can enjoy spectacular lakes & bracing swims. Which begs the question: Is Summer the new Winter...?

Travel News
Fly Tripping: get away from Heathrow

British Airways are launching more flights to the Alps from Heathrow next year. New routes will serve Grenoble and Turin with extra flights to Salzburg & Innsbruck. If the strike is still on then it will probably be with Qatar Airways.

Whilst the direct Eurostar to the French Alps only operates in Winter, it is still easy to get there in the Summer with a change in Paris on to the TGV. Daytime journeys are around 8 hours.

Glacier of the Week: Tignes, France

Do you want to go skiing but can’t wait until Winter and can’t bothered to go to Australia? Then you need to try Summer Skiing. The Grand Motte glacier above Tignes is open until 1 September.

Granted it’s only 20km of pistes but it’s better than a dry slope. Once conditions turns sugary, just head back down for walking, cycling, swimming or a nice sunny bar terrace.

Featured Destination: Ischgl

Zip it: Never a dull moment in Ischgl
Ischgl is one of my favourite Winter Resorts and its interpretation of après ski is legendary. However it is now a Summer destination in its own right thanks to a superb lift system (that can carry mountain bikes to 2,800m) and an extensive network of hiking trails.

Then there is the Skyfly zip line that can hurtle you back towards the Schatzi Bar before you can say Johnny Däpp. For relaxation, there are spas, outdoor pools and the après zip/hike/bike bars.

Signs of the Week: Choose your destiny in Big Bear, California
